about

Light Headed (2008): FreesoulJAH’s self-produced debut album, “Light Headed” (newly remastered from the original recording), is dense, sample-happy lo-fi, dropping clips of dialogue from Orson Welles, Dr. King and vintage educational videos alongside hypnotic, droning guitar loops and-chant like vocals. While the title track’s chiming guitars recall vintage Jeff Buckley, “Nothing to Fear” adds drum machine and synth stylings to the interlocking guitars and heavily filtered vocals. “I wanna bring peace to the people,” FreesoulJAH repeats on the track of the same name, emblematic of his use of repetitive choruses to achieve mantra-like effects.

Whether commenting on the media’s preoccupation with frivolity in the face of danger, or wishing birthdays celebrated the attainment of enlightenment instead of just another year’s age, the songs on this debut herald the birth of an artist concerned less with the way his songs might make you feel than the way his songs might creep into your consciousness, lock into a repeating groove, and slowly change you from the inside out.

His simple, mantra-like lyrics cut through the barriers of poetry and ambiguity to “speak truth to power” and offer a light in the darkness. ... more
