The Ultra Sound (2012): As if in response to his boundary-pushing electronica collaboration the same year, FreesoulJAH returns for his sixth album to the willful primitivism of his earliest works. Though his lyrics are more verse and chorus based than ever before, the musical backings here focus on the sound of a distorted guitar in a looping drone pattern, much as they did on “Peace Heart” and “Light Headed.” Near the start of the album, FreesoulJAH even adds a new effect: a sitar-like production technique added to his filtered vocal, producing a multi-hued drone effect under the melody. Aging and ineffectuality are the lyrical focus here: “It seems that I stumble just trying to climb up that wall,” the artist sings over a backing bass loop and wah guitar on “Open Up.” Later in the album, he muses on feeling like “a kid, but I’m almost 33” in the elegiac “The Evening” (which features the sounds of an outdoor night, the only non vocal or guitar based sound on the album).

Despite this pessimistic outlook, FreesoulJAH hasn’t given up his hope for the future yet: “Time has come for change,” he sings on “Every Little Sound,” and reiterates his old message of unification in “Nice and Easy:” “I like to hear the sound of my brothers.” Only the unintentional irony of “Occupy Wall Street (Acoustic Anthem)” dates this album, though the message of “resist the elite, freedom of speech” still rings true years after the grass-roots movement’s collapse.
