Please Don’t Eat My Face (2012): Produced as a collaboration between FreesoulJAH and Brian Flowers, “Please Don’t Eat My Face” departs from the songwriter’s standard operating procedure in a number of ways. Rather than a collage of mostly organic and acoustic sounds, this record is loop, synth and electronics-heavy. And rather than a series of short songs built around independent ideas, “Please Don’t Eat My Face” is one long, mostly wordless song, clocking in at just over forty minutes. With house, trance and dub elements weaving in and out alongside distorted voice clips and drone guitars (several of FreesoulJAH’s sonic trademarks), this is the easiest FreesoulJAH record to get lost in. Though lacking his signature ground-level philosophizing and revolutionary cheerleading, “Please Don’t Eat My Face” functions as a surprising evaluation of how well the FreesoulJAH sound works, even when removed from his sociopolitical message.
